Caitlina Fuller asked:

Power tools are designed to make life much easier for the average homeowner. A power tool can be a device as simple as a battery operated screwdriver or as powerful as a  rotary hammer.  Power tools are essential for performing common household repairs as they make quick work of those do-it-yourself jobs around the house.

When selecting power tools, it is very important that you look for quality. A cheap and inexpensive drill may seem like a good bargain at the time of purchase, but more than likely it will not have much power and will probably not last long. Spending a bit more money on a high quality drill is a wise choice. You should look for brand names that are trusted when selecting power tools. Hitachi power tools are some of the best you can buy and  there are retail outlets all around the world that sell the full range of Hitachi tools. Hitachi power tools are very reliable, durable and and very long lasting thanks to the company’s dedication to using the most advanced product designs and the latest technological manufacturing methods.

Makita tools are another line of power tools that are considered to be very good. Makita manufactures hundreds of high quality power tools that can get the smallest tasks done efficiently  and that can handle the biggest of projects as well. Makita has a great line of woodworking tools that are ideal for both home and professional products. Makita prides itself on the fact they only the best raw materials are used in their tools. For example, Makita uses  97 percent pure magnetic copper in its motors to ensure that they operate extremely well under extended use without overheating.

Another great line of high quality power tools are Milwaukee tools. Milwaukee tools are the tools of choice for the professional and industrial sectors as these tools are heavy-duty and very durable. Milwaukee tools include driver drills, reciprocating saws, hammer drills, rotary hammers, grinders and band saws, plus a whole lot more. Milwaukee tools makes its signature red power tools in both 120 and 230 volts for worldwide use. Founded in 1924, Milwaukee has been a industry leader in power tool technology and innovation.

No matter if you are a homeowner who likes to tackle the repairs around the home or if you are a sub-contractor who works with your hands for a living, it is essential that you use the best power tools available.

Benefits of Using Cordless Power Tools

Sunday, February 28th, 2010
Jeff Patterson asked:

Power tools that use battery or solar energy as their source of power are known as cordless power tools. These types of tools are used on job sites where there is no power supply or power supplies are inadequate. But because of their performance and versatility they are used almost in everywhere. Benefits of cordless power tools are -

The greatest benefit of a cordless power tool is that they are a take-anywhere tool. They offer superior convenience and portability. Craftsmen can carry it with them to their working place. It is better to take the tools to the job rather than bringing work back to the tools. It is possible if you have a cordless power tool to do your works. Another benefit of them is that they are cordless. You need plugs to work with a corded power tools. There are some places like garden, roads, unfinished constructions etc. where you may not find any plug. Working in such places cordless power tools is best. For working in high-traffic areas cordless tools are best as in such places cords can present a bigger safety hazard. When you will work with a cordless power tools there will be no laying cords around the job place to trap you or other workers. So it is safer than its corded version. Cordless power tools are lighter than the traditional power tools. So it is easy to carry and store them. Batteries are considered as more earth friendly then other source of power like gas. As batteries are used as the source of power for the cordless power tools, they are considered as a greener way of using tools

Should I buy power tools from Big Lots?

Sunday, February 21st, 2010
argh.pirate asked:

I want to buy a plunge router from Big Lots but it’s $30 and I wanted to know if anyone’s had experience with their tools. It’s made by Pro Source and I’m going to get a set for $89 that has a circular saw (5 3/8″), a jigsaw, a reciprocating saw, a light and a power drill. They are all cordless and it comes with two batteries. Is this a good deal too? Are these going to fall apart or are they good deals?

Power Tools Drill

Friday, February 19th, 2010
Jeffrey Richard asked:

Power tools drill thousands of holes in their lifetime. Take a little time and find the right cordless power drill for your application and make it a happy life for you and the drill.

Everyone has their favorite color drill, yellow blue, red, teal. You know the colors and the brands. But when you consider how many holes power tools drill for you, shouldn’t you look beyond the “color”? I feel there are a few things you should consider before you pick your favorite brand or color off the shelf.

First and foremost, what will be it’s job? If most of your work is drilling small holes and driving small screws, you don’t need a 24 volt monster to get the job done. Sure they have massive power but they can actually slow you down by adding fatigue after an hour or two of work. Many times a 12 volt or 14 volt unit will cover most jobs you may come across. If you need to drill large hole saw holes or deep holes or even use in a hammer drill mode, you may be better off with a big dog, but still the current 18 volt power tools drill with plenty of power for most jobs. If all you do is assembly type work, consider one of the small pocket drivers, especially the light weight lithium.

Battery type. You have 3 choices to choose from. Nicad, Nimh and Lithium batteries. Nicads have been around for years and are a great choice and all the major brands have them. Nimh offers more run time in the same size package although your choices are alot slimmer. Panasonic is the main one for the Nimh although you will find others. The premier choice, in my opinion is the Lithium battery tools. It’s hard to believe the run time you can get from such a small battery. Don’t worry about the power from such a light battery, remember, 18 volts of Nicad, Nimh or Lithium batteries will give you the same power.

How much will it be used. Remember we said power tools drill thousands of tools? Well not always. My 14 volt Bosch sees about 15 minutes of use every couple of weeks. My 12 volt Bosch saw about the same use for many years before the batteries finally go weak. If you are a homeowner, a lesser priced tool may be adequate for most of you applications. If you are a contractor, don’t skimp. A cordless drill is your right hand and makes you a good living. Buy a contractor grade tool and check the warranty. Some tools warranties are void if used in commercial application.

What do you have now. Okay. You have a favorite color tool and you have the radio, the vacuum the hat and everything. Well their is a lot to be said about loyalty. If you already have a whole shop full of Makita, why would you change and have to mix and match chargers and batteries? Valid point.

In conclusion, try to be color blind next time you pick out a cordless tool. Weight the above points and you’ll find that both you and your power tools will live happily ever after.

Shopping for Power Tools: Corded or Cordless?

Thursday, February 18th, 2010
Sheila Jonstone asked:

There’s one major thing that you should think about when shopping for a new power tool like a saw or drill. That’s whether to get a corded or cordless model. There are pluses and minuses to both types. Here’s a few things to consider before you hit the hardware store.

Most people are interested in cordless models first. There are a lot of immediate benefits to having a cordless power tool. The big one is of course, not having a cord to deal with. Sometimes it can be hard to find a place to plug into as all of the available sockets will be taken. With a cordless model you have the freedom to move around. This is fantastic if you are doing several home improvement jobs at the same time. You don’t have to keep plugging and unplugging the cord when moving between inside and outside jobs.

Cordless tools also have a few downsides. Charging the battery is a major complaint. It takes several hours to recharge a cordless battery pack. Unless you plan ahead, this can put a wrinkle in you home fix it plans. Also, battery packs tend to lose capacity over time and eventually won’t hold a decent charge. When looking at cordless tools, you should factor in the price of spare batteries.

Not having to deal with battery packs is the biggest advantage of corded power tools. You’ll always have full power every time you plug them in. Corded tools are also usually less expensive than their cordless counterparts. If you are only planning to do projects inside or near power outlets, a corded model may suit your needs.

Women’s Power Tools

Saturday, February 13th, 2010
Ivory Baxter asked:

Power tools aren’t just for men, that is a thing of the past. Women use power tools all the time now. The use of power tools by women has evolved as the family structure changed over time. Women have become more independent and the chores of the household have become less divided by gender.

While women can operate most any power tool, there are some out there designed specifically for women to use. Don’t worry, they aren’t pink and cute! The Barbara K line features a cordless drill that is very light, yet very powerful. The cordless power screwdriver is the best selling power tool of the line. It is light weight and very easy to use.

The Unbelievable Saw is a hand saw for women that is great for cutting limbs. This saw cuts well and is simple to use. It is also light weight. Women enjoy doing home projects, and finding the right tool can be hard. Black and Decker offers the Project Mate. It is a three in one tool - featuring a scraper, detail sander, and a screwdriver. It doesn’t weight much, fits in the palm of a lady’s hand, and fits in small spaces.

Wrenches can be difficult to maneuver in some areas. Craftsman has the Flex Wrench set in both standard and metric, with seven sizes of wrenches. They are great for getting into tight spaces. They also help give you some added strength to loosen or tighten anything.

A screwdriver is an essential tool for any woman to have. You never know when it will come in handy. Snap-on has the PentaGrip screwdriver that is amazing. It has a button on the top so you can lock the head into position. The handle is designed for smaller hands and has a soft grip.

Pliers to extract nails makes them a piece of cake to remove. It also prevents you from cutting your hands up on any sharp ones. They work great of headless nails too. These pliers are easy to use and easy to grip. The jaws are designed to increase the amount of force on the nail if you encounter some stubborn ones.

The idea of power tools for women is catching on. Five ladies from the University of Kansas are in the process of creating an entire line of power tools for women called Savvy tools. The line is meant to make power tools a more comfortable fit for women in the hopes of promoting safety and making them less intimidating. Bulky power tools are often hard for women to use. The first two power tools are in the works and even have names, Sandra Dee the Sander and Donna the Drill.

Power tools for women that are designed to help them complete projects are anticipated to sell well. Those manufacturers who take this market demand seriously are going to be able to profit from such products. The key is going to be conducting research and finding out what types of power tools women use and asking what they like and don’t like about them. Women don’t want just a smaller version of the power tools out there or the color changed to something pretty. They want power tools that are easy to use and get the job done.

Why are so many women afraid of power tools and machinery?

Thursday, February 11th, 2010
Shakes asked:

Has anyone else ever noticed how much more timid women are with working around noisy power equipment, guns, and machinery than men are? Do they feel overpowered by this stuff or something?

Note: This doesn’t apply to all women, as I do know of several women that aren’t afraid of these things. Although, most of those I’ve talked with told me that they were afraid at first and then they got used to it over time.

How safe are power tools?

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010
coasterfreak110 asked:

I am fourteen years old, and I have used probably about a dozen power tools safely, and many times. I have become more interested in building, and have the money to buy a kit of the necessary power tools, but I cannot persuade my parents to allow me to have them, as they think power tools are not safe. Are there any statistics stating they are safe, or is there a way I can prove to them I know how to use these tools correctly?

Power Tool Battery Directory: NiCad, NiMH, and Li-ion Batteries in Your Cordless Tools

Sunday, February 7th, 2010
Mallory Kramer asked:

be easy to forget the importance of a good battery in the functioning of your cordless tools. As it turns out, however, a good battery is just as integral to a cordless tool as a healthy motor. Battery technology has come a long way since the introduction of battery powered tools. Since the development of the Nickel Cadmium (NiCad) battery, power tool batteries have transitioned from NiCad to Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH), and most recently to Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) battery technology.

Nickel Cadmium batteries were the first on the market for cordless power tools and though the technology is older, it is still very reliable. NiCad batteries are less sensitive to adverse temperatures and have a high recharge cycle, meaning they can be charged and recharged repeatedly for a long period of time. NiCad batteries are also less expensive than NiMH and Li-Ion batteries. On the down-side, however, NiCad batteries tend to suffer from battery memory effect. This occurs when a battery can no longer accept a complete charge from the charger because it had been repeated charged without first being fully depleted. It seems the battery “remembers” how much energy it discharged, and only wants to accept back that much energy from charger. The element Cadmium is highly toxic making it the most harmful battery to the environment. The NiCad’s negative effects on the environment, in fact, cause them to be heavily taxed outside the U.S.A. As a result, many European vendors won’t sell NiCad batteries.

Nickel Metal Hydride batteries run on a higher amperage than NiCad batteries, because of this, they also have a longer run-time. NiMH batteries are lighter than NiCad batteries but they are far more sensitive to hot and cold temperatures, in fact, NiMH batteries can’t work in below freezing temperatures (32 degrees Fahrenheit and below) and they degrade very quickly in intensely high temperatures (105 degrees Fahrenheit an up). Although the NiMH battery has a longer run-time than the NiCad battery it doesn’t accept as many charges. NiCad and NiMH batteries do, however, have very similar overall lifespans. NiMH batteries have a larger energy storage capacity than that of the NiCad.

Lithium Ion batteries have a higher energy density than most other rechargeable batteries. A high energy density means that the Lithium Ion batteries have a superior energy to weight ratio storing more energy for their size than most other batteries. Li-Ion batteries have a very slow self-discharge rate meaning they retain their charge for much longer. Most rechargeable batteries significantly deplete over periods of unuse, the slow rate of charge-loss in Li-Ion batteries, however, allows them to maintain most of their charge long periods, even in storage.

There are many benefits to working with Lithium Ion batteries from their light-weight, to their long run-time. Li-Ion batteries maintain their charge for much longer and have continuous max power throughout their energy discharge cycle. Other batteries consistently lose power as you work. Li-Ion batteries are light-weight, and have a huge storage capacity, this means you now have a lighter, more efficient and powerful battery without the bulk.

There are, however, some disadvantages to Lithium Ion batteries. Li-Ion batteries are a bit more expensive. The complexities of producing Li-Ion batteries accounts for this price difference. Each Li-Ion battery also requires a specifically built charger to accommodate that type of battery; this means that chargers are more expensive as well, and aren’t universal to all types of Li-Ion batteries. The Li-Ion battery has a built-in chip that protects the battery from over and undercharging, and ensures a longer battery life. This computer chip, however, doesn’t allow the battery to continue accepting charge once that battery’s energy level has dropped below a certain point. Once this happens the battery is essentially dead. Li-Ion batteries also rely on this circuit to stay cool. Since Li-Ion batteries lose charge so slowly, and the battery and charger are so advanced, it’s fairly simple to keep batteries temperate and at a safe charge level.

Lithium Ion batteries are by a landslide the least detrimental to our environment, and for many reasons they are the favorite of most craftsmen.

Remember, the quality of the battery you use is just as important as the quality of your power tool. The battery gives the right amounts of energy and finesse to your tools and their working parts.
